Preparation
The first step in EAS Champion Porter Freemans' training
approach was working
around physical limitations (recent shoulder surgery
hampered Porter's approach). Secondly was making time to
get to the gym. Keep in mind that while the body thrives on
regularity it does not thrive on predictability Changing the
variable components in exercise helps to confuse and enhance the
metabolic activity. A precise approach to the diet phase
would provide stable blood sugar levels (for sustained energy)
while both incorporating anaerobic (weight training) and aerobic
(cardio involvement) workouts. His diet was based upon his
sensitivity to carbohydrate foodstuffs. The pattern of
feeding was designed to provide the most efficient use of
foodstuffs. Each day saw 5-6 meals spaced at three hour
intervals.
Phase
I
The Initial Approach
In a rehabilitative phase nerve endings surrounding
and involving the injured area must be "re-educated" by
introducing high contractile functions and adequate capillary
flow. The addition of twice daily cardio workouts were
immediately initiated. Porter began each day with 20-30
minutes of moderate, sustained interval jogging or cycling.
That afternoon, evening or later at night would find him in the
gym training with weights and then following with his second
cardio session.
Phase
II
Increased Workout Intensity
Having responded positively to the high repetition
"rehab" approaches, we next proceeded to workouts
designed to recruit more muscle fibers (heavier weights and fewer
repetitions). We would also vary the components of each
workout (speed of repetition, rest periods, actual time under
tension, etc.) At regular intervals, body fat analysis
and energy levels were assessed. Periodic rest periods were
taken as needed although in all honesty, getting Porter to back
off from the intensity factor was not easy. This was a man
with a mission.
Phase
III
Incorporation of "Double
Splits"
Training twice daily with weights along with dual
cardio sessions (A.M. and P.M. post-workout). Once again the
intensity factors were varied and manipulations in the
dietary stages were done.
Phase
IV
Approach to Final Conditioning
Very brief rest periods and strict adherence to
carbohydrate and fluid intake were crucial as the final days
(toward day 84) wound down. I knew we had accomplished a
major victory, win or lose, by setting forth worthy personal goals
and accomplishing them with an unyielding desire.
Final
Result
The EAS Granspokesperson Championship
186 lbs. at 13% body fat in just 84 days (down from
240 lbs. and 27% body fat). Porter was selected as the 1997
fat loss Champion. An even greater sense of reward came Aug.
16, 1997 when the announcement at the EAS Grand Spokesperson
Championship in Golden, CO claimed Porter Freeman as the 1997
overall Co-Champion and presented him with a $50,000 EAS
endorsement contract and a new Corvette. Porter's story can
be found in the inspirational video documentary "Body
of Work"and the best selling book "Body
for Life"
